Millions of people knew invading Iraq was wrong. Twenty years on, they’ve been proven right, time and time again. The Bush administration never found weapons of mass destruction, and their dream of building a U.S.-friendly government in Iraq blew up in their faces — all while the Iraqi people endured decades of violence and societal collapse. So did anyone benefit from the war? And how did the invasion change the world? 00:00 “THEY’LL WELCOME US AS LIBERATORS” 1:59 HOW AL QAEDA CAME TO IRAQ 4:54 HOW THE U.S. INVASION MADE IRAN STRONGER 8:04 WHY AMERICANS TURNED AGAINST THE WAR 10:00 HOW THE IRAQ INVASION MADE THE WHOLE WORLD LESS SAFE Subscribe for more videos: 🤍 Follow us on Instagram: 🤍 Like us on Facebook: 🤍 Follow us on Twitter: 🤍
Months after the United States invaded Iraq in 2003, I began filming the U.S. Army’s 2nd Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment (known as the Gunners) in Baghdad. The unit was housed in a bombed-out palace on the banks of the Tigris that they named Gunner Palace. Rather than just making a movie about the men, I suggested that we make a film together — an offer that the soldiers quickly embraced. They told the story of the war as only they could: They played guitar, spat out rhymes and played to the camera. But behind all their bravado and posturing, they were just kids who desperately wanted the world to understand the war through their eyes. In the last two months of 2003, the Gunners lost three men to I.E.D. attacks. They scrambled to create makeshift armor for their soft-skinned vehicles using scrap metal. When asked by a soldier about the lack of armor in 2004, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld famously said, “You go to war with the army you have, not the army you might want or wish to have at a later time.” They were the army we had. They fought an enemy they couldn’t always see in a land they didn’t understand for reasons that were never entirely clear. In the midst of the pandemic, I visited the men and spoke with them about how they make sense of their role in a war that has yet to be fully reckoned with. In "The Army We Had," the veterans grapple with a past that still reverberates powerfully through their lives. - Text by Michael Tucker - Film by Petra Epperlein and Michael Tucker More from The New York Times Video: Op-Docs: 🤍 Subscribe: 🤍 Watch all of our videos here: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 Op-Docs is a forum for short, opinionated documentaries by independent filmmakers. Text by Nicholas Kristof When President George W. Bush invaded Iraq 20 years ago this week, I was in the middle of the smoke and chaos of that cataclysmic war that became his best-known legacy. I wrote countless columns opposing an invasion, then I was scathing as I covered the war, and I still see it as a practical and moral catastrophe. But wait — what if there’s something Bush did that was even more consequential than the invasion of Iraq? And what if it was something astonishingly good? This is awkward, but I have to acknowledge that Bush deserves credit for the single best policy of any president in my lifetime. It’s called PEPFAR and if you haven’t heard of it, that’s part of the problem. So my colleagues and I in New York Times Opinion made this video essay about an initiative that Bush created 20 years ago that saved 25 million lives. With the anniversary of the Iraq invasion, there’s lots of commentary about his miscalculations and failures, and there should be. But we liberals also have to acknowledge that the most important humanitarian program of modern times wasn’t started by a progressive we admire but by a conservative evangelical whose policies we deplored. Curious to see what Baghdad Iraq look like in 2023? I was determined to get lost in the streets of Baghdad and get a better look at life in the centre of the city. I walked through the alley ways, shops and street markets alone and met many wonderful local Iraqi residents. Baghdad is the capital of Iraq and the second-largest city in the Arab world after Cairo, Egypt. It is located on the Tigris near the ruins of the ancient city of Babylon. Twenty years ago, thousands of American troops were racing across the deserts of Iraq toward Baghdad to depose Saddam Hussein. It led to a near-decade of civil war and occupation, no discovery of weapons of mass destruction, the deaths of more than 4,400 American troops and an estimated 300,000 Iraqis. Amna Nawaz discussed the decision to invade with Paul Wolfowitz, Vali Nasr and Charles Duelfer. It was supposed to be quick, and the invading American forces would be “greeted as liberators”, according to the neoconservative architects of the Iraq war in 2003. But, in fact, that war would become a turning point for the United States and the world. Historian Andrew Bacevich and journalist Jonathan Landay tell host Steve Clemons that the war’s consequences continue to unfold today, challenging the credibility of the “rules-based world order”, exposing the limits of what can be achieved through military force, and making people wonder what Washington means when it talks about “democracy promotion”. When thousands of United States troops from Georgia’s Fort Stewart and Fort Benning invaded Iraq on March 19, 2003, one was an Army specialist with a camcorder, Robert Ayres. Ayres was an infantryman deployed at a makeshift camp in the Kuwaiti desert a few weeks earlier called Camp Pennsylvania. As Army troops ramped up to cross the nearby Iraqi border, he trained his camcorder on some of his comrades-in-arms. Read more about Aryres mission: 🤍 11Alive is Where Atlanta Speaks. It's 20 years since US and British forces invaded Saddam Hussein's Iraq. The then US Secretary of State Colin Powell declared the time for diplomacy over, British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook resigned, and the second UN resolution authorising force was withdrawn. George W Bush, who was then president of the US, issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Saddam to leave Iraq or face war. What followed still reverberates today, from hundreds of thousands of deaths and missing weapons of mass destruction, to elections, the growing influence of Iran, the rise of ISIS, and the impact on US and British politics and foreign policy.
