MCA president Wee Ka Siong said the party respects the decisions of the people in the general election and will stay as the opposition. The elected Ayer Hitam MP stressed that BN has lost favour to form the government as the coalition has lost the people's mandate. "BN only has 30 seats, we don't have the capitals to form a government, therefore, we need to accept the people's decision." When asked whether MCA will consider supporting a minority government through a confidence and supply agreement (CSA), Wee said "Too early (to discuss). The Ayer Hitam MP secured 447 electoral votes against his rival, Kluang MCA division chairman Gan Ping Sieu, who received 182 votes in the party elections. The MCA president said when met by reporters at the Johor level Chinese New Year celebration at Yong Peng on Saturday (Jan 28), adding that there were about 2,000 chicken farms nationwide and more than 100 are located in Yong Peng, which is also a popular egg production area for the domestic market and Singapore. Wee hari ini menjelaskan beliau menarik balik dasar pengecualian kabotaj untuk kapal asing yang terlibat dalam pembaikan kabel bawah laut, antara lain untuk mengurangkan pergantungan pada kapal asing dan menggalakkan penyertaan kapal tempatan dalam kerja-kerja pembaikan tersebut. Anthony Loke (PH-Seremban) menegaskan tiada kapal daripada syarikat tempatan yang mampu membaiki kerosakan kabel bawah laut yang menghubungkan Malaysia ke rangkaian internet global. Gobind Singh Deo (PH-Puchong) kemudian turut mendakwa ahli parlimen MCA itu tidak memahami masalah sebenar isu tersebut. Semalam syarikat gergasi teknologi Microsoft, Google dan Facebook meminta Perdana Menteri Muhyiddin Yassin campur tangan berhubung keputusan Wee dan berkata keputusan itu akan memberi kesan buruk kepada ekonomi Malaysia.
Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said he is prepared to debate with MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong if the latter names the state government leader who allegedly received millions of ringgit in the controversial undersea tunnel project. MCA President Wee Ka Siong said that an Umno-PAS merger would go against the spirit of Barisan Nasional, which was about working together with different races. He said MCA had stated many times that their core value and ideology are totally different from PAS and as the BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi should consider the feelings of the other parties in the coalition as well. He added that the party would decide on their stand of remaining in BN at its annual general assembly on Dec 2.
