How come we’ve both become a version of a person we don’t even like? We’re in love with the world but the world just wants to bring us down By putting ideas in our heads that corrupt our hearts somehow When I was a child every single thing could blow my mind Soaking it all up for fun but now I only soak up wine They say to play hard you work hard find balance in the sacrifice Yet I don’t know anybody who’s truly satisfied You better believe I’m trying to keep climbing But the higher we climb feels like we’re both none the wiser So I hope I learn to get over myself Stop trying to be somebody else So we can love each other for free Everybody wants something, you just want me Why am I obsessing about the things I can’t control? Why am I seeking approval from people I don’t even know? In these crazy times I hope to find something I can cling on to Cause I need some substance in my life Something real, something that feels true You better believe for you I’ve cried high tides Cause I want you so bad but you can’t fight fire with fire Listen I know how low I can go I give as good as I get You get the brunt of it all cause you’re all I’ve got left Oh I hope in time we both will find peace of mind Sometimes the road less travelled is a road best left behind #Adele #IDrinkWine #30

WINE SCANDALS - Did you know these scandals that shook the wine world?

Support me on my PATREON: 🤍 Follow me on ...: 🤍 Check out my website: 🤍 Looking back at the history of wine you will find quite a few different scandals but I have selected three scandals that left an impression on the wine world. The first one is the so-called “antifreeze scandal”. It is easy to forget today that there was a time when producers in Northern Europe were struggling to ripen their grapes. Some crafty or rather criminal winemakers came up with the idea to add diethylene glycol to wine to make it taste sweet without having to go through the arduous of, you know, letting the grapes ripen. Diethylene glycol is also used as antifreeze, and it can be poisonous in larger quantities but for the wineries, it was an easy way to increase profits. This became common practice among a small number of wineries in Austria and some of these tainted wines were also sold in bulk to German bottlers. They managed to keep it secret for a few years but the scandal unfolded, when one producer, who only own a small tractor, tried to claim large amounts of antifreeze as a business expense. The reaction in the media was extreme and the news went around the globe. The story made the front page of the New York Times. Glycol was the word of the year in 1985 in Germany. Austrian wine was banned in several countries including the UK The first time I saw a reference to this scandal was in the Simpsons episode "The Crepes of Wrath" when two French winemakers are arrested after putting antifreeze in wine and making poor Bart drink it. As a result of all the unwanted attention exports of Austrian wine plummeted from 45 million liters a year to just 4.4m and also the reputation of German wines was tarnished. The dangers of Diethylene glycol were exaggerated as the levels in most wines were generally too low to cause lethal results or even health risks The highest level was 48 g/l in a bottle of Welschriesling Beerenauslese from Burgenland. Another far more lethal scandal is widely unknown: in 1986 a winemaker in Italy mixed methanol into his wine. Twenty-three people died and more than 90 were hospitalized. The positive side of this story is that the Austrian wine industry enacted strict wine laws and spend a great deal of effort in rebuilding its reputation. Let's move on to another scandal which was even turned into a book: The Jefferson bottles. This is one of the scandals that tells you a lot about the archaic way the wine trade sometimes operates. Let’s start with a question: If a German music manager approached you and offered you some bottles of 1787 Chateau Lafite owned by Thomas Jefferson without disclosing his source, would you spend six figures Dollars for it? The German music manager was Hardy Rodenstock and he became famous for locating the world's rarest wines. He has hosted exclusive over-the-top wine tastings with wines from the best estates going back to the 18th century and some of the most famous wine tasters came from Jancis Robinson to Robert Parker. He claimed that the bottles were discovered in Paris and that the inscription Laffite Th. J." referred to Chateaux Lafite and Thomas Jefferson – Thomas Jefferson was a wine lover – so that part of the story makes sense but all the rest doesn’t really. Experts from the Thomas Jefferson Foundation raised serious doubts about the authenticity of those bottles. And think about this: How many bottles in your collection have your initials engraved into them? Have you ever seen somebody do something like this? The Forbes family did not care too much and they stored the bottle in terrible conditions so that at some point the shrunken cork dropped back into the bottle destroying whatever was left of the wine. The story became more interesting when US businessman Bill Koch bought some of those bottles in 1988. He filed a lawsuit in 2006 after realizing that he had been defrauded and spent millions of private investigators. What followed were different trials and all of the accused claimed they did not know. After diving deep into the story it seems like Rodenstock had access to far too many great wines in large-format bottles. Koch's private investigator claimed that the bottles were probably old but the engraving suggesting that the wine was Lafite owned by Thomas Jefferson was added with a modern dentists drill – and la voila: The most expensive bottle of wine. You might think that people learned from their mistakes and that the industry became more careful and less naïve … think again cause here comes the story of Dr. Conti himself: Rudy Kurniawan.

Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase and consume. 90 - 95: An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. In short, these are terrific wines. 80 - 89: A barely above average to very good wine displaying various degrees of finesse and flavor as well as character with no noticeable flaws. 70 - 79: An average wine with little distinction except that it is soundly made. In essence, a straightforward, innocuous wine. 60 - 69: A below-average wine containing noticeable deficiencies, such as excessive acidity and/or tannin, an absence of flavor or possibly dirty aromas or flavors. 50 - 59: A wine deemed to be unacceptable. First of all, it is one of the best wines coming out of Bordeaux with a great track record to prove its ability to produce outstanding wine. It has produced more than 10 wines that received a perfect score from Robert Parker and is the favorite wine of presidents, kings, and billionaires I visited Petrus twice and the winery is fairly small and unassuming. It is not one of those amazing Chateaux that you see in Bordeaux left bank but it has a long history. It was for a long time considered to be a very good estate but it was not that famous initially. The region of Pomerol on the right bank is more rural and the quality of its terroir was overlooked. Petrus began to break through after the 1945 vintage. This was also the time when the Moueix family started to sell their wines. They made the winery famous in Europe and the US and even took over control of the estate in the middle of the 20th century. The vineyard is 11.4 hectares in size – way smaller than the vineyards of the first growths in the Medoc. Lafite for instance has more than 100 hectares of vineyards. It is located on a small plateau – not a steep vineyard but only a slightly elevated area. The soil is composed of clay and it is different from most other surrounding vineyards. Christian Moueix introduced green harvesting to the estate to reduce the crop level and Petrus is only based on 100 % Merlot since 2010, even though they used to have a little bit of Cabernet Franc on the estate. They do not produce a second wine so all of the base wines that do not satisfy their standards are sold off as nameless Pomerol or Bordeaux rouge. Quality is only one factor when it comes to the price though. I mean you can find wines that receive great scores and are a lot cheaper. The famous critic Robert Parker was sometimes a bit critical of the estate and in his Bordeaux book he wrote that other Pomerols re on the same level or even better. But Petrus represents more than the best Pomerol can ever offer- it is more like a Myth than a wine. That is certainly true I remember well the special moments when I was a young sommelier, and someone ordered a bottle of Petrus. Pulling that cork was an honor and the guest who purchased it was our favorite guest of the night … The wine production is also fairly limited compared to Latour, Lafite, Margaux, and Co. and as demand is high and supply is low the prices shoot up into the stratosphere… The price is however crazy and I don’t think that there is any relationship between price and quality when it comes to these wines. I also have to say: The Haut Brion that was in second place in the survey would have been a lot cheaper … The 2004 Haut Brion cost around 700 Dollars a bottle which now sounds like a bargain … It is crazy how flexible our relationship to money is. The wine that I discovered is from the 2004 vintage which is a solid year but not a great one. This is one of the reasons that the wine was less expensive… still very expensive but less expensive. Robert Parker wrote this about the wine: The dark plum/ruby-tinged 2004 Petrus possesses high acidity as well as copious amounts of sweet cherries and black currants intermixed with hints of cola, earth, and truffles. Deep, medium-bodied, concentrated, ripe flavors are excruciatingly firm and tannic. This backward, structured, muscular Pomerol requires a decade of cellaring, but it possesses the potential to be the longest-lived wine of the vintage, lasting 30-40 years. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2035.

The Wine Spectator is a widely distributed wine magazine and they have put together a Top 100 list each year since 1988 Their editors select the most exciting wines from the wines they reviewed during the year. They are not necessarily picking the most highly rated wines but also look at the price and availability, I rarely read the Wine Spectator as I think that it is more of a lifestyle magazine and I don’t like the fact that they allow advertisements of producers that they are also supposed to review independently. This is a problem in wine writing in general. Magazines are today relying heavily on money from wine producers and how are you supposed to objectively review a wine from a winery that pays the bills? On a lighter note: I just had a look at the first Wine Spectator Top 100 from 1988 and it is quite funny: First of all, there is a lot of Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Barbaresco among the best wines, and only two wines from the US in the Top 20 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg is listed at 210 US$, Petrus at 160 US$, and Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Cuvée at 12 US$, double the price of Antinori's Santa Cristina … How times have changed!

It takes skill to find value wines, wines that are not expensive but deliver bulk loads of quality and I therefore want show you how to find great bottles that most of you will be able to buy without breaking the bank All these value wines together cost less than 100 US$ and I am going to taste them in order to verify whether they over deliver in quality. These wines were selected by Leon and while he normally has unlimited budget – within reason – for my videos I told him this time to spend less than 100$ on 5 bottles of wines. I realize that 100$ for 5 bottles is still a lot of money but these wines should offer great value for money. Of course - value has to be looked at in relation to where the wine is from. A 10 Dollar bottle of Burgundy is rarely as good as a 10 Dollar bottle of Portuguese wine but in the context of its origin it might offer great value. In most cases you find great values off the beaten tracks though. Wines from regions that are less well known, made by overlooked producers using hard to pronounce grape varieties are often much better value compared to the next Bordeaux Chateau.

Should You Cook with Cheap or Expensive Wine?

Cooking with wine is a great way to add depth to many dishes and sauces. While many chefs claim you should only cook with wines that you would consider “drinkable”, I’ve always questioned whether the quality of the wine actually has an impact on flavor. Tasting a 159-year-old wine. Poison or Perfection tasting with Master of Wine. Support me on my new PATREON: 🤍 Follow me on ...: 🤍 Check out my website: 🤍 I have used this glass in this Video: RIEDEL Veritas Champagne I have tasted the following wine in this Video: 1863 J. W. Burmester & Co. Reserva Novidade de 1863 Engarrafado em 1932 – Reengarrafado em 1942 2011 Burmester Colheita The 100 Point Scoring System (from 🤍robertparker.com): 96-100: An extraordinary wine of profound and complex character displaying all the attributes expected of a classic wine of its variety. 70 - 79: An average wine with little distinction except that it is a soundly made. Burmester does not have any records of the wines reaching this far back but from what my contacts said this is a wine from the 1863 vintage that was aged in large barrels and then was bottled into large glass balloons – so-called Demi Johns in 1932. After 10 years it was then bottled into this bottle. Think about what the wine must have seen over the years. In 1863 Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation to free slaves in US confederate states, it was also the year the Football Association formed in England and the year the International Committee of the Red Cross was established and the year Rockefeller started the oil business that would make him the richest man in the world. On top of that, It was also an extraordinary vintage for Port. Most vintage charts do no go back as far as 1863 but I found a couple of older tasting notes rating this wine 100 Points and Taylors’s – another famous Port house – made a special bottling of their 1863 and sold it for several thousand dollars a bottle. Taylors are saying that: “The harvest of 1863 was one of the finest of the nineteenth century and the last great Port vintage before Phylloxera spread throughout the Douro Valley.” Yes, that is another interesting part of the story because Phylloxera the insect that destroyed most vineyards in Europe in the late 19th century / early 20th century was first discovered in 1863 in the south of France. After seeing their vineyards going down the drain winemakers realized that they could combat Phylloxera by grafting their vines onto American rootstocks, that are resistant to this louse. However almost all vineyards in Europe have since then not been planted on their own rootstock and there are some that say that the old – not grafted vines produced better wines As this is from a vintage before the vines had to be ripped out in the Portugal as well this wine is actually 100% from Vitis Vinifera vines – and from one of the best vintages on top of that. Vintage is a very important factor when it comes to the age worthiness of wines. If you want a wine to age for centuries you have to make sure that it is from a very good producer, from a great vintage, and ideally, a sweet wine as they tend to keep longer. This wine ticks all the boxes and on top of it, it is comparable to a Colheita Port from today. Colheitas by law are Tawny Ports made with grapes from a single vintage. They should be matured in wooden casks for at least seven years but remember: The 1863 was aged in barrels for 69 years!
